"Dresden, once hailed as a smart city, is currently facing challenges!"
In the latest Bitkom Smart City ranking, Dresden, the capital of Saxony, has experienced a significant drop from its third place ranking in 2022, now sitting in eighteenth position. This decline has raised concerns among city leaders, particularly within the SPD faction.
The drop in ranking can be attributed to a notable worsening in the areas of administration and IT & communication. Factors such as the quality and user-friendliness of digital services, website information content, social media presence, chatbot availability, and broadband expansion have all contributed to Dresden's slide down the rankings.
In contrast, Leipzig has seen a rise, climbing from thirteenth to ninth place in the current year's ranking.
Munich, however, has maintained its position as Germany's smartest city for the third year running.
The Bitkom ranking, now in its seventh consecutive year, evaluates cities based on various categories, including IT & communication and administration. For the IT & communication category, the expansion of fiber optic and broadband networks is considered. Meanwhile, the administration category focuses on the content and user-friendliness of websites, online presence on social networks, and chatbots.
The chairwoman of the SPD faction in Dresden, Dana Frohwieser, has stated that Dresden is lagging behind in city comparisons. She also expressed concern that this decline is not a good sign for further science or industry settlements in Dresden.
This drop in ranking serves as a warning signal for city leaders, who are now tasked with addressing the areas of concern and working towards improving Dresden's standing in future rankings.
