"Director Tim Burton Explains the Delay in Launching Beetlejuice 2"
Chatting With Tim Burton: The Long Long-Awaited Beetlejuice Sequel Finally Arrives
It's been a whopping 38 years since Tim Burton's classic film Beetlejuice graced our screens, but now, we're ready to once again be "seized" by the chaotic specter that is Beetlejuice! With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice set to hit theaters on September 6, Burton has finally put an end to years of fans asking, "When are you doing Beetlejuice 2?" And, oddly enough, he's answered, "What took you so long?"
Speaking to multiple journalists, including io9, Burton shared his journey to the sequel he's always wanted to make. "Questions about a sequel have been asked from the very beginning," he noted. "But nothing clicked, and it couldn't have happened until now." For Burton, the time was only right when he could truly embrace the sequel and delve into the story of Lydia. "I remember wondering, 'Well, what happened to this person 35 years later?'" he said. "Thinking about Lydia's life as an adult became the emotional hook of the movie."
Burton revealed that the movie has become a very personal endeavor for him and has even taken a somewhat autobiographical turn. "It's a bit like 35 Up...You go from a cool teenager to what, some kind of messed-up adult, or whatever?" he shared. "And what relationships do you have? Do you have kids and...what's your relationship with that? So it's not something I could have done back then; it's only something I could do once I experienced those things myself."
When asked about Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis' characters, the ghostly Adam and Barbara Maitland, who were the emotional core of the original, Burton shared that their absence is due to the challenges of reprising their roles, since their characters do not age in the spirit realm, but the actors have aged significantly in real life. While de-aging technology was considered, ultimately, it was deemed insufficient, leading to the decision to exclude them from the new film.
The creative direction of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice appears to focus on new characters and storylines, with the sequel exploring narratives such as Lydia's daughter. But don't worry, the original's themes and characters will still shine through in this delightfully macabre ensemble.
