Digital Advancements and Artificial Intelligence Aspirations in Xiamen Highlighted by Congo
Republic of Congo Embraces Digital Future at BRICS Forum
The Republic of Congo has reaffirmed its commitment to shaping Africa's digital future, as evidenced by its active participation at the recent BRICS Forum on the Partnership for the New Industrial Revolution held in Xiamen, Fujian Province.
At the forum, Congo's Minister, León Juste Ibombo, led the delegation and presented the country's strategic vision for digital innovation. This vision emphasizes Africa's active and respected contribution to international digital governance.
One of the key announcements made during Congo's participation was the creation of the Africa Center for Research in Artificial Intelligence (CARIA). Developed in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Information and Communication Technologies (CAICT), CARIA is being established as a pan-African hub for research, training, and innovation.
CARIA will encompass a joint AI laboratory, innovation and research facilities, advanced mobility and training programs, and solutions tailored to African priorities. The centre is expected to position Africa as an active and respected contributor to international digital governance.
In addition to CARIA, Congo is strengthening its digital infrastructure through flagship projects like the Central African Backbone for regional connectivity. This initiative aims to improve regional connectivity and expand telecommunications coverage across the country.
Moreover, Congo's approach to digital development prioritizes co-construction of inclusive, locally adapted digital solutions rather than mere technology adoption. This approach aligns with Congo's strategic vision for digital innovation, which includes Africa's place in the global technological landscape.
Congo's engagement at the BRICS Forum reflects a broader strategy to align technological advancement with human-centered development, regional integration, and international cooperation. This strategy is further demonstrated by Congo's leadership role in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), with President Denis Sassou N'Guesso currently serving as the African co-chair.
Congo's participation in the BRICS Forum also highlights its cooperation with China. The country aims to be a strategic actor in shaping Africa's digital future through this partnership and its commitment to scientific excellence through CARIA.
Furthermore, CARIA is intended to link with global innovation ecosystems, including the BRICS AI Center, the Smart Africa Alliance, and the AI Hub in Rome. This connection will foster collaboration and knowledge exchange, ultimately contributing to Africa's digital transformation.
Lastly, the national data center is a key component of Congo's digital sovereignty. By establishing and strengthening its digital infrastructure, Congo is positioning itself as a driving force in Africa's digital transformation.
As the Africa Center for Research in Artificial Intelligence takes shape, the Republic of Congo continues to reaffirm its role as a pioneer in Africa's digital future.
