Development of Charging Facilities Persists in Bergisch Gladbach
Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, is taking strides to address the increasing demand for public charging options for electric vehicles (EVs) in its cityscape. The city only allocates areas for public charging infrastructure where there is still an unmet need.
The administration is in contact with companies that have been awarded contracts by the federal government to realize two fast-charging sites in the city as part of the Germany network. The focus of these expansions is shifting towards supplying inner-city residential areas, which often lack charging options.
As of now, there are around 80 public charging points at charging stations operating in the city. The number is expected to double in the coming weeks, with the upcoming fast-charging stations planned to be located at the large car dealer on Mülheimer Straße. Preparations, including road lane closures, are ongoing, although the exact commissioning date has not been specified.
The expansion of public charging infrastructure is being driven by private operators such as BELKAW, Wirelane, Hochtief Ladepartner, E-Hub Solutions, and Qwello Germany. The administration provides the required urban traffic and parking areas for the expansion of public charging infrastructure.
An up-to-date overview of charging points in operation and in concrete implementation can be found on the city's website. Further locations for public charging infrastructure are currently under review.
The demand for public charging infrastructure was first calculated in 2023 by the EcoLibro office from Troisdorf based on a comprehensive data basis. The demand analysis for public charging infrastructure was updated in 2025 to take into account current developments and the already implemented expansion of public charging infrastructure in the city area.
The city of Bergisch Gladbach is committed to densifying public fast-charging infrastructure in the future to ensure a sustainable and convenient charging network for EV users.
