Desktop-caliber GPU performance unveiled through AMD's Strix Halo-equipped gaming handheld, with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 offering performance close to Nvidia's RTX 4060.

The GPD Win 5, a new entrant in the handheld gaming console market, is creating quite a buzz with its impressive performance figures. Teased in late July, this device, powered by AMD Strix, is set to make its public debut at the ChinaJoy expo in Shanghai, China.

The top-tier model of the GPD Win 5 boasts an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, a flagship mobile CPU that is AMD's most powerful to date. This high-end processor, limited to 70 watts, is expected to contribute significantly to the device's premium pricing, with rumours suggesting a price range over $1,500 for the high-end variant with 32 GB of RAM.

In terms of performance, the GPD Win 5 has delivered impressive benchmark scores. It achieved a score of 30,495 points on Cinebench R23, comparable to desktop-class Intel Core i9-13900HX processors. Moreover, in Time Spy, it managed to score 9,680 points, which is within spitting distance of the record set by the RTX 4060.

The GPD Win 5's graphics prowess comes from the Radeon 8060S GPU, which is included in the top-tier model. The more affordable variant, on the other hand, features the Ryzen AI Max 385 and Radeon 8050S.

The GPD Win 5's cooling system is unique, as it lacks an internal battery in favour of an external 80 Wh battery pack. This design decision, aimed at improving cooling, has resulted in the CPU reaching a maximum temperature of 80.3 degrees Celsius while running at full tilt, and exhaust vents at the top of the Win 5 only recording a temperature of just over 45 degrees Celsius.

The GPD Win 5's display is a 7-inch 1080p 120 Hz panel with VRR support, making it a dream for gamers seeking smooth, high-resolution gameplay on the go.

However, the memory capacity for the more affordable variant of the GPD Win 5 has not been fully disclosed, and neither have the specifications of this model. The fans of the Win 5 ran at around 95dB during testing, indicating a noticeable level of noise.

In conclusion, the GPD Win 5 is shaping up to be a high-performance handheld gaming PC, justifying its relatively costly price bracket compared to its predecessors and competitors. With its powerful processor, impressive graphics, and high-refresh-rate display, it promises to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience for those willing to invest in it.
