Denmark's Nets payment system encountered a breakdown due to a 'technical glitch'

In a recent incident, the Danish payment company Nets experienced a three-hour breakdown on Saturday evening, affecting card payments across the country. The outage disrupted activities at the Great Belt Bridge tolls and the Musik i Lejet music festival, among other places.

The cause of the breakdown was a "rare component failure" in Nets' systems, which was due to a failure of an underlying infrastructure located with a global partner. Despite the backup system designed to take over in such a failure, it was unable to step in.

Business owners and customers have criticised Nets' communication during the outage. In response, the company's country director, Allan Bonke, has acknowledged the criticisms and stated that Nets is reviewing its communication processes to address these concerns.

To reduce the impact of future outages, Nets is rolling out a new offline function that will allow international cards or mobile phones to be used, even when the system is down or internet connections fail. This offline option supports all card types, including those requiring balance checks and mobile payments.

Initially, the offline solution has been implemented in critical sectors like supermarkets and pharmacies to ensure consumer access to necessities during outages. Some merchants also accepted offline payments using existing co-badged Dankort cards, though this was limited and not widely known among merchants.

During previous disruptions, merchants temporarily reverted to accepting cash payments or other non-card methods. However, the enhanced offline card payment solution is the primary strategic alternative Nets is rolling out to minimize the impact of future outages for all types of card payments across sectors.

Nets has been in contact with customers regarding the breakdown over the last four to five days. Recognising the need to better inform merchants about the offline function they can use in the event of a breakdown, Nets has also been working to improve awareness of this solution among businesses.

The new offline payment solution, developed together with the Danish National Bank, is set to provide a more reliable and accessible alternative during future outages at Nets, ensuring smooth transactions for both businesses and customers.
