Decentralized wireless network Helium, powered by Solana, discloses partnership with AT&T
Laying Down Roots:
Get the inside scoop! Telecom titan AT&T has jumped aboard the decentralized wireless network Helium's bandwagon, granting its subscribers access to a plethora of Wi-Fi hotspots.
This collaboration will let AT&T patrons reap the rewards of enhanced network coverage, thanks to the community-run Helium Network. Plus, AT&T will receive a bouquet of "coverage quality metrics" courtesy of Helium's decentralized network.
Amir Haleem, Helium co-founder and Nova Labs CEO, enthused, "Partnering with AT&T is a giant leap towards our vision of bringing reasonably priced and accessible internet to the people. Collaborating with an industrial heavyweight like AT&T enables us to speed up Helium's adoption and deliver tangible benefits to both AT&T and its subscribers."
Helium's network thrives on a grassroots level, with individuals and businesses deploying hotspots to earn rewards in Helium's token. These mini cell towers aid approximately 700,000 daily users, providing coverage via the Helium Network, according to data from world.helium.com. The network boasts over 93,000 hotspots worldwide, primed to welcome a batch of new users courtesy of AT&T’s 118 million-plus mobile subscribers[1][2].
“Overseas Helium hotspot owners stand to benefit from an influx of fresh users: AT&T subscribers. As these members connect to nearby hotspots, traffic increases, resulting in earnings for the data they transfer.” Mario Di Dio, GM of Helium's network, explained to Decrypt.
The alliance between Helium and AT&T is set to be an ongoing venture, with Di Dio sharing that Helium’s mission included expanding its partnerships globally and considering AT&T a long-term strategic collaborator in that effort.
In the past, Helium Mobile, built on Helium’s network, partnered with telecom corporation Telefónica, establishing hotspots in Mexico City and Oaxaca to bolster Telefónica's Mexican coverage. This February, the pair took things up a notch, offering Helium network access to over 2.3 million Movistar subscribers, Telefónica's flagship mobile carrier.
That same month, Helium Mobile introduced its "Zero Plan": a mobile service that comes with 3GB of data, 300 texts, and 100 minutes of talk time per month, all free of charge. Helium Mobile's backbone, Nova Labs, announced recently that the SEC had rules the case against Helium closed[3]. Establishing that its token and crypto-incentivized hotspots are not securities.
