Cryptocurrency Swindle: AI Dupes Victims, Commandeering YouTube Accounts for Ethereum Heist (256 ETH)

In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency, a new threat has emerged: a series of scams on YouTube that are targeting unsuspecting investors. These scams, which have been circulating since early 2024, are using multiple videos and various YouTube accounts to reach potential victims.

The scammers exploit YouTube by creating and promoting fake cryptocurrency trading bots using AI-generated videos, deepfakes, and hijacked or old trusted accounts. They post tutorials or livestreams that appear legitimate, often showing unrealistic profits, and direct users to deploy malicious smart contracts disguised as trading bots.

One of the key methods scammers use on YouTube includes AI-generated avatars and synthetic voices, producing large volumes of convincing scam content cheaply. They mimic real influencers or financial advisors to lure victims. Deepfake videos and livestreams featuring fake interviews with crypto celebrities like Vitalik Buterin and Elon Musk are also used to create an illusion of legitimacy and urgency.

Scammers suppress negative comments and feedback under scam videos to create a false sense of trust and legitimacy. They also hijack old, reputable YouTube accounts or use bots to post deceptive videos that seem trustworthy, promoting fraudulent software and trading strategies.

The malicious smart contracts, once deployed, siphon off the crypto assets into attacker-controlled wallets using obfuscation techniques to hide the theft. Victims are prompted to deposit at least 0.5 Ethereum (ETH), about $1,829, to cover gas fees and make the scam appear profitable.

These scams have reportedly stolen hundreds of ETH (256 ETH specifically cited) and over a million dollars from victims since at least last year, illustrating the sophistication and scale of these campaigns.

Security experts recommend verifying the authenticity of both YouTube accounts and smart contracts, avoiding deployment of untrusted code, using hardware wallets with two-factor authentication, and urging platforms like YouTube to better regulate financial fraud content to protect users.
