Hyundai Inster Set to Debut in Australia's Electric City Car Market

Hyundai has confirmed that their latest electric city car, the Inster, will be released in Australia in 2023, with an expected arrival in the first quarter of 2025. The Inster, a compact vehicle with a footprint of 3825mm by 1610mm, is smaller than the BYD Dolphin, offering less metal for your money due to its smaller dimensions.

The Inster will be launched in a two-grade lineup, with the base model priced at around AUD 39,550, rising to AUD 45,000 for the high-spec Inster 02 with a 49kWh battery. These prices position the Inster as a potential competitor against the Chinese-built BYD Dolphin, one of the most affordable EVs in the Australian market.

The Inster offers a vehicle-to-load function, allowing its stored energy to be offloaded to household electrical devices. Inside, twin 10.25-inch screens provide driver info and infotainment functions. The Inster's efficiency claim with the long range battery is 14.9kWh/100km, and it has a WLTP range of 370km when equipped with the 49kWh lithium-ion battery. Opting for the long range battery also increases power from the single electric motor from 71kW to 85.5kW.

All seats in the Inster can be folded flat to create a portable loungeroom or a micro-van. The Inster is also equipped with a heat pump and integrated battery heater to improve battery health and reduce energy consumption.

While no pricing details for the Hyundai Inster or BYD Dolphin city cars are available in the Australian market, Hyundai’s other electric models like the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 are priced significantly higher, reflecting their larger size and premium positioning. To accurately compare Inster and Dolphin prices in Australia, more detailed, model-specific pricing data is needed from official Hyundai and BYD Australian sources.

The BYD Dolphin, an affordable, compact electric hatchback designed for city use, is typically priced lower than large SUVs or premium EVs. The Hyundai Inster, on the other hand, is expected to be positioned differently, possibly aimed at a slightly larger or more feature-rich segment than the BYD Dolphin.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Hyundai Inster as it approaches its Australian launch in 2025.

  1. The Hyundai Inster is anticipated to enter the electric city car market in Australia in 2025, potentially challenging the position of the BYD Dolphin, which is one of the most affordable electric vehicles in the Australian market.
  2. The Inster, with its two-grade lineup and prices ranging from AUD 39,550 to AUD 45,000, is expected to be positioned differently from the BYD Dolphin, perhaps targeting a slightly larger or more feature-rich segment.
