Company Information or Business Data
The Bertelsmann Foundation has recently unveiled two new data initiatives, Compass Municipality and the Civil Society Data Atlas, as part of their commitment to promoting data-driven societal development and improved public administration transparency.
Compass Municipality is a data portal designed to provide detailed data about local government operations and community indicators. It aims to support transparency by making local data accessible and understandable for citizens, officials, and researchers. The unique selling proposition of Compass Municipality is a municipal population forecast up to 2040, calculated at the level of municipalities, districts, and federal states. The data for Compass Municipality is sourced primarily from official statistics and the Federal Employment Agency.
On the other hand, the Civil Society Data Atlas offers comprehensive data on civil society organizations, mapping their activities, resources, and impact areas. This tool helps stakeholders understand the landscape of NGOs and non-profit entities, fostering collaboration and informed policy-making. The Civil Society Data Atlas is a metadata portal that enables civil society organizations to make their open data discoverable and searchable.
The Bertelsmann Foundation collaborates with the Civil Society Data Atlas, bringing expertise in open data, data management, and data infrastructure to discussions. This collaboration aims to increase the utility and societal impact of open data from civil society organizations.
Workshops and various publications by the Bertelsmann Foundation also aim to contribute to the development of expertise in the rapidly evolving field of open data. Networking opportunities with the Bertelsmann Foundation are also available via LinkedIn.
The Bertelsmann Foundation supports the exchange and networking within the community through event formats like the Open Data Network Meeting and the Open Data Barcamp. The Data for Society project, which includes Compass Municipality and the Civil Society Data Atlas, facilitates access to and visualization of data related to local governments and civil society organizations.
An update of a care prognosis and a demographic typification is planned for Compass Municipality. The Bertelsmann Foundation's newsletter, Data for Society, provides updates on these topics and can be subscribed to on their website. The Foundation encourages interested parties to contact them to foster ideas exchange on these topics.
The Civil Society Data Atlas, when based on data from multiple data providers, has the potential to significantly increase its societal impact. The portal was developed in consultation with various civil society organizations and launched in the summer of 2025. The Civil Society Data Atlas seeks to close the gap of data that are made available under an open license in civil society.
While direct detailed public descriptions of the "Data for Society" project with Compass Municipality and Civil Society Data Atlas are sparse, these initiatives typically align with broad goals common to data projects in civil society: improving access to social and governmental data, supporting research, enabling civic engagement, and guiding policy decisions based on reliable, open data sources. These tools often include advanced data visualization, geo-coded mapping, interactive dashboards, and regularly updated data sets on societal metrics collected from government and non-governmental sources.
