Clop Leads Q1 2025 Ransomware Surge, North America Hit Hardest
The cybersecurity landscape has seen a shift in ransomware activities in Q1 2025. Clop emerged as the most prolific actor, responsible for 19% of attacks, while North America bore the brunt of 48% of all ransomware incidents in March.
Clop, Akira, RansomHub, and Babuk2 together accounted for 45% of ransomware attacks in the first quarter. Notably, the newly discovered VanHelsing group has also made its mark with significant attacks. March saw a decrease in ransomware incidents by 32% month-over-month, with 600 reported cases. However, year-over-year, cases increased by 46%. Babuk2 claimed the highest number of attacks, but the legitimacy of these claims is questionable.
The ransomware landscape continues to evolve, with new actors like VanHelsing emerging and established groups like Clop and Babuk2 maintaining their presence. Despite a month-over-month decrease, the year-over-year increase in ransomware cases underscores the ongoing threat and the need for robust cybersecurity awareness measures.
