CIGA's Innovative Timepiece Draws Inspiration from Black Holes, Absorbing Light Rather Than Emitting It

In the realm of watchmaking, a new star has emerged. CIGA Design, in collaboration with Swiss atelier Label Noir, has unveiled the Black Star model, a unique timepiece that takes its inspiration from the enigmatic and mesmerizing phenomenon of black holes.

The Black Star watch is a testament to innovation and creativity, with its dial designed as an 8.5mm concave pit coated in Super Black pigment, absorbing an astonishing 99.6% of visible light. This feature creates a void-like effect reminiscent of a black hole, transforming the brand's signature single-hand timekeeping into a cosmic aesthetic.

The dial also showcases a galaxy rendered through CMYK gradient printing, with blue pixelated arcs, scattered white stars, and a luminous polar star hand that orbits around the darkness. In low-light scenarios, the polar star hand and both the hour and minute rings are lumed with Super-LumiNova, creating a spectacle in darkness.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Black Star watch is CIGA Design's Asynchronous-Follow Technology. This technology allows the hour ring to rotate 30 degrees while the minute ring spins a full 390 degrees, creating an unconventional approach to timekeeping that complements the cosmic theme.

The watch retains the same water resistance rating of 30m as the standard Blue Planet II, and the 46mm case is coated with a black DLC, a treatment influenced by Label Noir, maintaining the same 15.6mm thickness, integrated lug design, and 30m water resistance as previous iterations. The case is paired with a black fluororubber strap and a folding clasp.

For those interested in unique watches with black hole-inspired dials, the Black Star watch is available now through CIGA Design's website for $1,980. Each purchase comes with custom packaging made from recycled paper and a handwritten letter from Label Noir. The watch also features a quick-release system for easy strap swapping.

While minimalist black hole-inspired watches exist, the Black Star watch stands out with its complex and symbolic design. For those who seek a watch that is as captivating as it is functional, the Black Star watch is a must-have addition to any collection. The mechanical movement of the Black Star remains the same CIGA CD-04-S automatic movement as the standard Blue Planet II, with a 4Hz beat rate, 41-hour power reserve, and an accuracy of +15/-30 seconds per day.

In a world where watch designs can often blend together, the CIGA Design × Label Noir Black Star watch offers a unique aesthetic that has not been seen in previous watch designs. The watch is not a limited edition, making it accessible to watch enthusiasts who wish to explore the cosmos on their wrists.
