Chiquita Brings Bananas Home to Italy for the First Time

Chiquita, a global leader in bananas, is making waves in Italy. Thanks to the tropicalization of the climate, the company is set to grow bananas locally for the first time. This marks a significant step in Chiquita's relationship with Italy, boosting its presence and supporting the Italian production chain.

The project begins with the planting of 20,000 organic banana trees in Sicily. This initial phase is expected to yield the first Italian-grown Chiquita bananas by 2026. Chiquita's Sales Director in Italy, Costabile Romano, sees this venture as a chance to strengthen ties with Italian consumers and promote local production. The banana will be marketed as an 'Italian product', blending a global brand with Italian agricultural excellence.

This move comes on the heels of other tropical fruits finding a home in Italy. Avocados, mangoes, papayas, and passion fruit are already thriving due to the warmer climate, thanks to a process known as tropicalization.

Chiquita's foray into Italian banana cultivation signals a new chapter in the company's Italian journey. With the first harvest expected in 2026, this initiative not only expands Chiquita's local presence but also supports the Italian production chain, offering consumers a taste of Italy in every banana.
