China filing: Tesla applies for updated Model Y in regulatory documents

The facelifted Tesla Model Y was unveiled in China today, marking the latest iteration of the popular electric SUV. This updated model offers both single-motor and dual-motor versions, each with unique characteristics in terms of battery capacity, power, and range.

## Battery Capacity and Supplier

The single-motor Model Y, also known as the Standard Range RWD, uses a 60 kWh battery with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Known for their long cycle life, LFP cells are suitable for daily urban use. In contrast, the dual-motor Model Y, available in Long Range AWD and Performance versions, utilizes a 75 kWh battery with Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry, offering higher energy density for better acceleration and range.

## Power and Performance

The single-motor Model Y provides 295 horsepower, making it suitable for daily commuting and offering a more affordable price point. The dual-motor Model Y (Long Range AWD) offers a combined higher horsepower, providing better all-wheel drive capability. The Performance model, tuned for a sportier feel, offers even more power, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds or 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

## Range

The single-motor Model Y offers a range of approximately 455 kilometers (WLTP standard), while the dual-motor Model Y (Long Range AWD) provides a range of up to 533 kilometers. The Performance model, despite its sport-tuned setup, offers a slightly lower range of 514 kilometers.

## Pricing and Availability

The facelifted Model Y is now available in China with two variants: a rear-wheel-drive version with a starting price of RMB 263,500, and a long-range all-wheel-drive version with a starting price of RMB 303,500. The entry-level version is priced up by RMB 13,600, or 5.44 percent, over its predecessor. The long-range all-wheel-drive version is up by RMB 12,600, or 4.33 percent, compared to its predecessor.

The sales deadline for the facelifted Model Y Launch Series is February 28, and deliveries are expected to begin in March, pending regulatory approval. Customers who order the model before then can get an additional two years or 40,000 kilometers of extended warranty.

The facelifted Model Y is included in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's latest catalog of models that will soon be allowed to be sold for public comment. This is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China. The public can submit feedback on the Model Y between January 11-17.

The facelifted Model Y is available in a five-seat configuration and is offered in two variants called the "Launch Series". The rear-wheel drive version of the facelifted Model Y is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 62.5 kWh and has a CLTC range of 593 kilometers. The long-range all-wheel-drive version comes with a 78.4 kWh battery pack and has a CLTC range of 719 kilometers, which Tesla claims is the longest-range Model Y in history.

The single-motor models of the facelifted Model Y are powered by batteries from CATL, while the dual-motor versions are powered by batteries from LG Energy Solution. The facelifted Model Y is priced at approximately $35,940 for the rear-wheel-drive version and $42,794 for the long-range all-wheel-drive version based on an exchange rate of 1 USD = RMB 7.3326.
