Carbon capture company, Aker, ventures into Finland's Power-to-X sector
In a significant stride towards a carbon-neutral future, Norwegian company Aker Carbon Capture has announced its entry into the Finnish Power-to-X market. The company will conduct a pre-engineering study for St1, a Finnish energy company, to develop a carbon capture facility at Finnsementti's Lappeenranta cement plant.
St1, known for its research and development of economically viable, environmentally friendly sustainable energy solutions, aims to start producing synthetic methanol by 2026. This ambitious project, named the St1 Power-to-Methanol Lappeenranta, marks the start of Aker Carbon Capture's carbon capture journey in Finland.
The carbon capture facility, to be provided by Aker Carbon Capture, is expected to capture around 40,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. This captured CO2 would be utilised for the first renewable synthetic methanol plant in Finland, enabling the production of 25,000 tonnes of methanol per year.
St1 sees Power-to-X as an interesting possibility to help decarbonize the transport sector. The company's CEO, Valborg Lundegaard, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "We are proud to be at the forefront of the production of renewable synthetic methanol, and we believe that this project will significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector."
Riitta Silvennoinen, Head of Energy Transition Business at St1, also shared her thoughts, saying, "We are excited to partner with Aker Carbon Capture in this groundbreaking project. This collaboration will not only help us in our mission to become a frontrunner in the production of renewable synthetic methanol but also aligns with Finland's strong ambition to go climate neutral by 2035."
Joel Flitton, Sales Director Sweden and Finland at Aker Carbon Capture, highlighted the company's dedication to help decarbonize the cement industry through its carbon capture technology. He said, "We are thrilled to be part of this project that will not only reduce CO2 emissions but also contribute to the production of renewable synthetic methanol in Finland."
The funding for the St1 Power-to-Methanol Lappeenranta project is provided by the European Recovery and Resilience Facility. The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted the project a conditional funding of EUR 35.4 million.
More information about the St1 Power-to-Methanol Lappeenranta project can be found on St1's website. It is worth noting that Aker Carbon Capture is currently delivering the world's first carbon capture facility at Norcem's cement plant in Brevik, Norway.
