Capella Supercomputer Leads in Power and Efficiency, Ranked 51st in Top500

The latest Top 500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers, released in June 2022 at the ISC High Performance conference in Hamburg, Germany, is headed by a renowned group of experts including Erich Strohmaier, Horst Simon, Jack Dongarra, and Martin Meuer. Among the list's notable entries is Dresden's Capella supercomputer, which has made significant strides in both power and efficiency.

Capella, primarily used in artificial intelligence and data analysis, has secured the 51st position in the Top500 list. Its impressive performance is not only reflected in its ranking but also in its practical applications. Capella is instrumental in training European language models and contributes to critical areas such as medical research and Earth system science.

In the Green500 list, which focuses on energy efficiency, Capella ranks an impressive fifth. This dual prowess in power and efficiency is a testament to the supercomputer's design and management. Capella's peak performance stands at 38 Petaflops, enabling it to perform 38 billion calculations per second. To put that into perspective, a human would take an astonishing 1.2 billion years to perform the same calculations in just one second.

Capella's inclusion in the Top500 and Green500 lists underscores its significant role in accelerating progress in key technologies. Its contributions to medical research, climate modeling, and artificial intelligence are invaluable. As supercomputers like Capella continue to advance, they promise to reshape our understanding of the world and drive innovation in various fields.
