Brand-new Tesla Cybertruck fails after 70 miles, owner comments: "Glad it malfunctioned, easier to tackle issues at the outset"
In a recent turn of events, Shane Misner, a resident of Kansas, experienced a motor failure in his newly-purchased Tesla Cybertruck. The failure occurred during a charging session at a Tesla supercharger station, causing the vehicle to shut down completely and necessitating a tow truck to transport it back to the showroom.
Misner shared his experience on the "Cybertruck Owners Only" group on Facebook, posting a video of his Cybertruck's center touch screen flashing red and displaying "Pull Over, Vehicle Shutting Down." Despite this setback, Misner remains supportive of Tesla, viewing the failure as an opportunity for the company to address and fix any issues early in the vehicle's life.
This failure seems to be related to the left rear motor of Misner's tri-motor Cybertruck. Steve Dallas, another Cybertruck owner, has suggested that early models, particularly tri-motor versions, may have reliability issues related to the inverter. Dallas's comments indicate that the failure experienced by Misner might be related to the inverter issue.
Tesla's Cybertruck service manual provides insight into the complexities of repairing the rear drive inverter and motor mount assembly. The process includes disconnecting various electrical and coolant connections, removing multiple bolts securing the motor mount and inverter to the subframe and gearbox, draining coolant from the inverter, handling high-voltage components with ESD (electrostatic discharge) precautions, and tightening bolts to precise torque specifications with proper tools.
Given the detailed nature of these steps and the complexity reflected in the manual, an experienced Tesla service technician might take approximately 3 to 5 hours to complete a motor swap at a service facility. If a left rear motor fails, as in a tri-motor Cybertruck, the vehicle will be towed to a service center for major repairs, implying the repair is not a quick field fix.
However, it's important to note that not all Cybertruck owners have experienced issues. Satesh Raju, for instance, has driven 8,000 miles in 3 months without encountering any problems, while Andrew Bartlett has driven 12,000 miles without any issues. Some Cybertruck owners in the Facebook group have defended Tesla, stating that one vehicle failing on the first drive does not necessarily indicate reliability issues with all Cybertrucks.
Despite the recent failure, Misner's Cybertruck performed well for the 70 miles he drove before the failure. The inverter issue in early Cybertruck models has reportedly been fixed, offering hope for future owners and current ones experiencing similar issues.
