BMW iX1 concept design showcases a refined New Class style makeover

BMW is set to revolutionise its product line-up with a significant design change that will mirror its new Neue Klasse philosophy across most of its models by the end of 2027. The Neue Klasse design, first showcased in the prototypes of the iX1, will be a key feature of this transformation.

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW's chief designer, announced the new design language starting with the iX3, the first model of the Neue Klasse. This design philosophy will be applied to both combustion-engine and electric cars, ensuring a consistent and modern look for all new BMW models.

The Neue Klasse design will not make it easy to distinguish between gas and electric cars at a distance. This approach aims to create a unified and cohesive identity for BMW's entire portfolio. Prototypes of the iX1 have already been spotted testing, hinting at major design changes that will extend to technology like iDrive X, pioneered by the all-new iX3.

The current X1 and iX1 will undergo significant changes as well, with the entry-level crossovers scheduled for a Neue Klasse glow-up. The sleeker X2/iX2 with its coupe-style roofline will inherit the new Neue Klasse look. The compact luxury crossover, the X1, may even skip the usual Life Cycle Impulse and head straight to the next generation.

All new models, including the X2/iX2, will receive slender vertical kidneys, first used in 1933 on the 303 midsize sedan. The extent of the X1/iX1's updates will also be reflected in the long-wheelbase model sold in select markets.

BMW plans to overhaul nearly its entire portfolio by the end of 2027, with more than 40 next-generation and facelifted models set to be launched during this period. Munich is eager to align most of its products with the iX3's Neue Klasse styling in a short timeframe, marking a new era for the iconic German car manufacturer.

This design overhaul is not just about aesthetics. It is a strategic move by BMW to create a unified and recognisable identity for its electric vehicles, as the automotive industry moves towards a more sustainable future. The Neue Klasse design philosophy will be a significant part of the major design changes seen in the prototypes of the iX1, setting the stage for BMW's electrified future.
