In 2022, Morgan and Lichtenstein were arrested for conspiring to launder 119,754 Bitcoins (BTC) stolen from Bitfinex in 2016. They used advanced techniques to cover their tracks, including using exchanges without KYC, dark web markets, and mixers. Morgan pleaded guilty in 2023 and faces up to 10 years. Prosecutors recommend an 18-month sentence for her cooperation.

Part of the stolen funds was used to buy gold coins, hidden by Morgan. Over 94,000 BTC, valued at $3.6 billion at seizure, was confiscated. The final verdicts are set for November 14 and 15, 2024.
