Berlin Senate Selects Consortium for ICC's Sustainable Future
The Berlin Senate has chosen a consortium of Berlin-based companies from construction, architecture, project development, and building technology to develop the future of the International Congress Center (ICC). The consortium's identity remains confidential, but their expertise in complex building development and commitment to sustainability have been noted.
The selected consortium brings extensive experience in heritage protection and environmental remediation, crucial for the ICC's redevelopment. They plan to renovate, refurbish, and possibly rebuild the building, then operate it sustainably. The usage concept will focus on art, culture, creative industries, innovation, technology, and congress management, aligning with the ICC's intended purpose.
The consortium will engage in a dialogue with the jury until the end of April 2026 to finalize the usage concept. A recommendation for award is expected in July 2026. Other applicants were not admitted to the next round due to insufficient compliance with the requirements. The goal of the concept procedure is to find a suitable operator for the ICC. The building will be erected on the site at Messedamm 9, with the land remaining in the state's ownership and granted in perpetual usufruct for 99 years.
The chosen consortium's expertise and commitment to sustainability bode well for the ICC's future. Their dialogue with the jury will shape the ICC's usage concept, aiming to create a vibrant hub for art, culture, and innovation. The final recommendation for award is expected in July 2026, marking a significant step towards the ICC's redevelopment.
