Behind-the-scenes look at creating our latest game, Pips

In the world of digital gaming, a new star has emerged. On August 18, the Games team unveiled Pips, a fresh take on traditional domino and logic games that has quickly become a favourite among players.

At the heart of Pips is Rodolfo Kurchan, a puzzle maker with a unique approach. Unlike many games, Kurchan's Pips puzzles are not pre-designed but rather crafted using a random selection of dominoes. This approach ensures each puzzle is unique, offering an exciting challenge every time.

To create these puzzles, Kurchan arranges dominoes on a desk, calibrates difficulty levels, and adds region conditions. The result is a game that is both strategically challenging and visually appealing.

Pips caters to a wide range of players with three daily levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and hard. For those just starting out, easy puzzles consist of 4-5 dominoes, while medium puzzles use 7-9, and hard puzzles feature 10-16.

The game shares similarities with other beloved games like Rummikub, Mexican Train dominoes, and Scrabble. Kurchan appreciates the tactile, communal experience, friendly competition, and just the right amount of logic that these games offer.

Pips isn't just another digital game, though. It's a logic puzzle game based on dominoes that requires players to arrange dominoes to fill a board, meeting certain conditions based on parity, similarity, or dot sums.

Heidi Erwin, another puzzle maker for Pips, appreciates the handmade aspect of the game, forging a stronger bond between puzzle maker and solver.

For those familiar with crossword puzzles, Pips will feel familiar. Both games share a similar skill: using pattern recognition and logic to solve what is known and fill in what is uncertain.

Interestingly, Kurchan has never worked on a logic game before Pips. With 15 years of professional puzzle construction and editing under his belt, Kurchan has brought a fresh perspective to the world of logic games.

As the team worked on Pips, 'Pip, pip, hooray!' became an unofficial cheer. The excitement and enthusiasm for this innovative game are palpable, and it's easy to see why. With its modern twist on traditional games and unique, handcrafted puzzles, Pips is a game that promises to keep players engaged and entertained for hours.
