Barnes & Noble and Appcelerator Partner to Enhance Nook Color App Development

Barnes & Noble and Appcelerator have joined forces to accelerate the development and deployment of applications for the NOOK Color Reader's Tablet. This partnership was announced at the CODESTRONG 2011 developers conference in San Francisco, where the NOOK Developer team will present a breakout session on developing apps for NOOK Color on September 19.

The NOOK Color Reader's Tablet, priced at $249, boasts a 7-inch VividView color touchscreen and offers built-in email, an enhanced Web experience, and high-quality NOOK Apps. Barnes & Noble's extensive library, featuring more than two million titles, is readily available on the NOOK Bookstore.

The partnership with Appcelerator will make it easy for developers with existing applications to port them over to the Nook App Store. Appcelerator's Titanium program offers an accelerated submission process into the Nook Developer system and listing on the app store.

Titanium is one of the leading mobile cloud platforms for developers, with a user base of around 200,000. It benefits developers publishing applications for the NOOK Color tablet by enabling cross-platform development using JavaScript. This allows them to create apps with native controls for Android-based devices like the Nook Color.

With Titanium, developers can write code once in JavaScript and deploy on multiple platforms, including devices running variants of Android such as the Nook Color. They can also access native UI controls and animations, enhancing the performance and user experience of their apps. The free development framework supports building and animating views and images easily, leveraging native user interface components.

Developers can extend app functionality by using or creating custom modules, which may help in tailoring apps specifically for the Nook Color hardware and software environment. While the search results do not explicitly mention the Nook Color, its Android base aligns with Titanium’s support for Android apps, making Titanium a suitable option for developing and publishing apps on that tablet.

Barnes & Noble operates 704 bookstores in 50 states and 635 college bookstores through its subsidiary, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. The company was the first to offer digital lending for a wide selection of books and provides free Wi-Fi connectivity in its stores for NOOK owners. Barnes & Noble conducts its online business through BN.com, one of the Web's largest e-commerce sites.

The CODESTRONG conference will bring together Titanium mobile developers from around the world for 25+ keynotes and sessions. Barnes & Noble will participate in the event, showcasing the potential of the NOOK Color and the opportunities it presents for developers.
