VA Tech Wabag's Advanced Wastewater Treatment Project in Bangalore

VA Tech Wabag, a leading player in the recycling and reuse sector, has secured a significant Design, Build, Operate order worth approximately ₹380 crores from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The project, funded by the World Bank, involves the construction of four Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in Bommanahalli, as part of the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Program.

The project, scheduled to be completed over 30 months, includes the Design, Engineering, Construction, and Commissioning of WWTPs with Tertiary Treatment Facility, Biogas Generation, Solar Sludge Drying Beds, Intermediate Pumping Stations, and associated piping works.

Sustainability and Features

The plants use cutting-edge treatment processes to produce high-quality treated wastewater suitable for industrial reuse, thereby reducing the demand for fresh groundwater or surface water sources. Organic sludge from wastewater will be processed onsite to produce biogas, which will generate energy to help power the plants, reducing reliance on external electricity and cutting operational costs.

Solar energy is used to dry sludge, further enhancing the sustainability profile by minimizing energy consumption and reducing waste management issues. To efficiently transfer treated water for reuse and safely handle sludge and biogas, the project includes the construction of intermediate pumping stations and extensive piping works.

VA Tech Wabag will manage the plants for 10 years, ensuring sustained performance and adaptability to evolving water reuse needs.

Impact on Water Security

The project is a critical component of Karnataka's broader Water Security and Disaster Resilience Program. By enabling the reuse of treated wastewater for industrial consumption, it will substantially reduce Bengaluru’s freshwater demand, easing stress on the city’s limited water resources.
