Bandai Namco's debut roguelike game, with its anime girl characters, bears a striking resemblance to Hades, offering enjoyable gameplay. However, the developers' claim that it's "unlike any roguelike" seems to fall short of the mark.

Casual Chatter:Hey there! Let's talk about Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree, the new roguelike title from Bandai Namco. Despite being similar to Hades in some aspects, it definitely has its unique charm.

The Lowdown:Towa, developed by Brownie, is all about companionship. You get to pick your main sword-wielding hero (Tsurugi) and mystical staff-wielding support (Kagura) from a charming cast of eight. In my demo, I teamed up Nishiki, the sinewy Koi fish, and Rekka, the badass girl with bangs.

Combat Perks:Entering Towa's world as a duo instead of a solo champion provided a nice sense of flow during battle. I didn't have to constantly check my health or worry about overexerting a single character since I could swap between them like trading dance steps. The game's controls were more elaborate than Hades, but the fluid combat felt quite impressive.

Hading Soup?I feel like Towa was inspired by Hades, which I personally love. However, I couldn't escape the sensation that I could be playing Hades instead. Some elements, such as Boons (Grace in Towa), gates, and water-replenishing stations, were all too reminiscent of Hades, to the point that it felt like they were mere scraps of their source material. It's a shame because Towa shines in combat, and I wish it would break free from the Hades influence just a bit more.

Summing It Up:Towa will be available on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Give it a try if you're in the market for a Soulslike-ish game with a twist of dual character systems and strategic team synergy!

P.S. Code Vein 2, the vampire game sequel, also seems promising. But we'll save that for another time.
