Autonomous vehicle ride-hailing services initiated by Waymo and Uber unfold in Atlanta

In an exciting development, Uber and Waymo have partnered to bring autonomous ride-hailing services to the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. This collaboration combines established technology with familiar consumer interfaces, making the transition to autonomous vehicles more seamless for users.

The service is now available through the Uber app for UberX, Comfort, or Comfort Electric rides. Passengers can opt-in to increase the likelihood of being matched with an autonomous vehicle, which may be a fully autonomous, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE, operated by Waymo.

Once a Waymo vehicle is dispatched, passengers can unlock doors, access the boot, and begin their trip through the Uber app. The app allows passengers to interact with the vehicle, just as they would with a traditional Uber ride. There is no additional fee for selecting a Waymo vehicle.

Safety remains a top priority. Uber's autonomous vehicles must adhere to established safety guidelines, and both companies have included in-app and in-car customer support, available around the clock for those needing assistance during their journey. Passengers will be informed ahead of time and have the option to switch to a non-autonomous ride if preferred.

The Waymo vehicles will operate within a 65-square-mile area of Atlanta, including Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View. However, Uber has indicated plans to expand this service area over time.

This partnership is part of broader efforts to integrate autonomous vehicles into existing ride-hailing networks. Waymo's autonomous fleet, with millions of miles logged on public roads, aims to reduce traffic-related injuries. The leadership for the development and operation of Uber's autonomous trucks in Atlanta, Georgia, is taken over by Raffi Krikorian.

Atlanta residents can take advantage of this innovative service, offering a glimpse into the future of transportation. With the Uber-Waymo partnership, the road to autonomous ride-hailing is one step closer.
