Autonomous shuttle buses in Zurich Airport attain Level 3 automation capabilities.

Zurich Airport has embarked on an innovative journey with the commencement of an autonomous shuttle bus pilot project. The project, a collaborative effort with technology company WeRide, has seen the introduction of autonomous shuttle buses operating between Gate 101 and Gate 130.

The initiative, which started in March 2025, has already reached automation level 3. Each autonomous shuttle vehicle is currently manned by a safety driver in case of emergencies. Hundreds of test runs and comprehensive technical testing have been performed as part of the project.

Currently, the buses are being tested without passengers. However, if the tests prove successful, these vehicles may indeed operate autonomously with passengers on board in the near future.

In a significant first for Europe, these autonomous shuttle buses are being tested within the flight operations area of the airport. A new IT infrastructure has been implemented as part of the project, with a remote control station installed and tested at the ZRH Innovation Hub since September 2025.

The remote cockpit, located at the ZRH Innovation Hub, will allow for the monitoring of vehicles going forward. The airport has announced its intention to test the use of remote monitoring in the near future, marking another step towards full autonomy.

The next milestone for the project is to reach automation level 4, which would mean no safety drivers on the buses and only remote monitoring. This would be a significant leap forward, making Zurich Airport the first in Europe to operate such a system.

The success of this autonomous shuttle bus pilot project could pave the way for more efficient and sustainable transportation solutions at airports across the continent, including the potential for remote jobs in the industry.
