ASEAN Cargo Dominance Ambition Unveiled through Significant Expansion Project at Suvarnabhumi Airport
Suvarnabhumi Airport, a crucial transport hub within the ASEAN region, is set to undergo significant transformation under the strategic vision of Airports of Thailand (AOT) Plc. The ambitious plan aims to elevate the airport to a leading air logistics hub in the region.
At the heart of this transformation is the development of a 58,000-square-metre Mixed-Use Logistics Centre adjacent to Warehouse 4. Paweena Jariyathitipong, the Acting Senior Executive Vice President (Corporate Strategy) at AOT, recently presided over the launch of the "Cargo Network 2025" initiative, which fosters collaboration within the airport's free zone and cargo warehouses.
During the launch, the initiative saw participation from government representatives, logistics associations, and international partners, signalling a positive trajectory for Thailand's air cargo development. The Cargo Network project is deemed crucial for enhancing Thailand's air freight system.
AOT's focus is on cultivating a modern, secure, and efficient Air Cargo Ecosystem designed to support the burgeoning international freight business and adapt to shifts in the global economy. A pivotal mechanism driving this ambitious project is the promotion of the Bulk Utilisation Programme (BUP), an internationally recognised standard that aims to significantly increase cargo handling capacity and delivery efficiency.
To attract international investors and firmly establish Thailand as ASEAN's premier air logistics hub, AOT plans to develop vacant land at Suvarnabhumi Airport into the Mixed-Use Logistics Centre. This cutting-edge facility will cater to the demands of modern logistics activities, including the growing e-commerce sector and advanced smart logistics delivery systems.
In addition, AOT has launched a major land development plan offering 46 plots around six key airports, aiming to boost the airport's and region's economic competitiveness. These parcels, strategically located near highways and other infrastructure, create dynamic new business and tourism centres.
Suvarnabhumi Airport is also undergoing significant expansions, including the East Expansion and the development of the South Terminal, to support rising passenger volumes and cargo throughput. This expansion increases capacity to meet ASEAN's growing logistics demands. The airport recently opened a third runway, significantly increasing its flight handling capacity.
AOT is actively inviting investors and business partners to participate in these development projects, showing readiness to cooperate with various types of investors under suitable agreements. This model aligns with global best practices, fostering a collaborative ecosystem for airport-related business growth.
