In the latest issue of 3D World magazine, the work of 3D artist Shuhang Li has caught the attention of the design community. Hailing from Chengdu, China, Li's art piece, which can be seen here, showcases a stunning dragon set within a lush, simulated forest environment.

Li's piece, inspired by the movie How to Train Your Dragon, is a testament to his mastery of 3D artistry. The dragon's body and skin, in particular, make use of the Sub-Surface Scattering material effect in Arnold, creating a lifelike quality that is truly captivating.

Colour variation was a key focus for Li in the texture painting stage, resulting in a vibrant and realistic appearance. The final piece was styled to look more photographic, with the self-luminous shaders for the dragon's wings adding an ethereal glow.

To achieve the forest setting, Li used Maya to simulate a real-world environment, complete with foliage and shadows. The texture painting was done using Substance 3D Painter, and the final compositing stage was completed using Lightroom with filter effects.
