Apple projected to unveil Vision Air headset and smart glasses within the upcoming two years, according to analyst predictions

Apple, the tech giant known for revolutionising consumer electronics, has revealed its planned release schedule for an array of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) products. The company aims to broaden its AR/VR ecosystem with iterative improvements and mass-market accessibility over the next few years.

In late 2025, Apple will release an upgraded version of the Vision Pro headset, featuring the M5 chip, replacing the current M2 processor. This model, expected to ship 150,000 to 200,000 units, will largely retain the original Vision Pro’s specifications.

Fast forward to 2027, and Apple will launch multiple head-mounted AR/VR products. The Vision Air, a significantly lighter headset (about 40% lighter than the existing Vision Pro), with a new form factor and powered by the latest iPhone processor, is anticipated to be released in the third quarter of 2027.

In addition to the Vision Air, Apple expects to ship over 10 million AR/VR products in 2027, with a mass-market, display-less pair of smart glasses also on the horizon. Four pairs of smart glasses are in development, including a Ray-Ban style product projected to ship 3 to 5 million units in 2027.

Towards the latter half of 2028, Apple will release a second-generation Vision Pro headset featuring a full redesign, which will be significantly lighter and offered at a lower price point. This model will also be powered by a Mac-grade chip, marking a major upgrade from earlier versions.

Simultaneously, Apple is scheduled to introduce XR glasses equipped with a built-in see-through color display and AI connectivity, designed to deliver an extended reality experience. These are scheduled for mass production in the latter half of 2028.

The release roadmap shows Apple’s strategic push to broaden its AR/VR ecosystem. The smart glasses, despite being a year away, are predicted to be released in 2027, with projected shipments of 3 to 5 million units. Apple has made progress on a specialty chip designed for smart glasses, which may include versions with and without AR functionality.

Apple's AR/VR products are expected to compete directly with Meta and its Ray-Ban and upcoming Oakley models. The company is reportedly focusing on developing both eyewear and headsets for future products, signalling a significant investment in the AR/VR sector.

The Apple Vision Pro, although a year old, has not gained significant public attention due to its high price and lack of functionality. However, with the upcoming releases, Apple aims to make AR/VR technology more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.
