Anticipations for Decreased Congestion in Bottroper South: Smarter Road Management Techniques
Bottrop to Implement Intelligent Traffic Management System
The city of Bottrop is set to introduce an intelligent traffic management system on the main traffic axis from Essen to Bottrop, aiming to improve traffic flow, safety, and environmental sustainability.
According to SPD councilor Andreas Morisse, the city has been advocating for such a system in southern Bottrop for over four years. He emphasizes the need to utilize all the possibilities that the system offers.
The system is expected to feature the use of AI and sensors to monitor and control traffic dynamically, adaptive traffic signals, congestion detection, and integration with public transport and bike-sharing services like metropolradruhr. SPD faction leader Matthias Buschfeld expressed hope that the traffic management system would relieve traffic on Oskarstraße and connecting streets in Ebel.
The cost of the traffic management system is estimated to be around two million euros, with the majority of the funding coming from the Federal Ministry of Transport. The funding for the traffic management system amounts to more than 1.56 million euros.
The new system will enable digital communication between vehicles, traffic lights, and a traffic control center. Initial orders for the intelligent traffic management system have already been placed.
As part of the traffic management system, intelligent traffic lights will be installed from the main station to the Hochschule Ruhr West. The system is intended to ensure smoother traffic flow, especially on the congested main traffic axis between Essen and Bottrop.
Further steps include the renovation of Bahnhofstraße and the expansion of Gohrweide, which are expected to also relieve traffic in Ebel. Employees of a commissioned company will explain the concrete possibilities of the new system in the upcoming traffic committee meeting.
The traffic management system in Bottrop, as designed, aims to increase traffic safety and efficiency while reducing negative environmental impacts. It is an important step towards managing traffic in southern Bottrop, according to councilor Morisse. The system is also expected to help relieve traffic in Ebel, a relief that is much needed, given the long-term closure of the A42 and the future-oriented and sustainable fulfillment of mobility needs in line with environmental protection guidelines.
