Android App Review Period Expected to Increase by Unknown Developers Due to Google's Policies
Feeling the Crunch? Google Tightens Android App Review Process
The rise in app rejections on Google Play Store has got malicious app developers scrambling to hide their malware better. In response, Google has announced it will now take extra time (not weeks) to review apps from developers new to their platform.
Google's statement reads,
"We're adding more time (days, not weeks) to review apps from developers yet to make an impact with us."
Last year, Google tightened the screws on the app review process by imposing stricter guidelines for SMS and Call Log permissions for apps, leading to a plunge of 98% in apps with access to sensitive user data.
This extended review process is aimed at battling the escalating flood of malicious apps slipping through the cracks.
Developers, fret not! While Google's updated review process might feel daunting, it's a common, if not longer, affair compared to the App Store. Only about 50% of apps get reviewed within 24 hours on the App Store, with the rest getting reviewed within 48 hours.
Google has promised developers more open communication, detailed explanations about evaluations and appeals, and human intervention in the process. Developers facing blocked accounts can file an immediate appeal that will be reviewed by a human.
For users, it's good to see Google constant improvements and revamps in the Google Play Store, which, let's face it, has been a mist-filled forest of questionable apps in the past.
