Romania's Vice President of Media Regulator ANCOM, Pavel Popescu, declared in an interview with Politico on March 24 that Romania is waging an information battle against Russia to thwart election manipulation, contradicting claims by several US officials and individuals such as Elon Musk that Romania is suppressing free speech to achieve this goal.

Hangin' with the Homies, But Fightin' the Good Fight: Romania's Digital Battle Against Election Meddling

Pavel Popescu, ANCOM's VP, spilled the beans to Politico on March 24, lettin' us know that Romania ain't afraid of no information war with Russia, just tryna keep ‘em election-fiddlin' hands off our democratic process. Contrary to what some US bigwigs like Elon Musk have been yappin' about, it ain't about censorship, y'all.

Romania's been smack dab in the heat of the global online speech regulated debate ever since its Constitutional Court nixed the 2024 prezzy elections because of pro-Russian ultranationalist Călin Georgescu's win in the first round. And guess who's ain't runnin' in the do-over election scheduled for May? That's right, ol' Călin.

The Court's decision was based on a report from the Romanian Intelligence Service claimin' that social media algorithms had been tricked to benefit Georgescu, sparkin' a host of journalistic and state investigations. They found a pile of cash had been poured into Georgescu's online campaign.

To keep things fair and square, Romania's gonna get tough on social media platforms, with ANCOM steppin' up to enforce the European Union's social media rulebook, aka the Digital Services Act. And ANCOM's VP, ol' Pavel Popescu, ain't messin' around. He said, "We're fightin' it, and we're fightin' it hard with all the institutions."

With influence suspected to be comin' from outside Romania, the authorities had a shock when they got hit with a barrage of critiques about free speech from US officials. Popescu even caught some flak from Elon Musk, who on March 10 posted, "You can tell who the bad guys are by who is demanding censorship."

If Musk's labelin' ANCOM a threat, ol' Pavel said he better cool it and start carryin' on a convo with Romanian authorities, just like he did with Germany's Alternative for Deutschland party.

Speakin' of Musk, his satellite company, Starlink, is testin' some controversial new apps in Romania with ANCOM's nod. The tests involve challengin' globally agreed limits on power flux density, standards that ensure satellite internet services don't mess with each other. This cap restricts the speed and coverage area that satellite services like Starlink can offer.

According to Popescu, ol' Elon owes Romania more than just a debate for all the good stuff ol' Romania's done for his companies.

Starlink services have been authorized and rollin' in Romania since March 2022.
