Alberta Emerges as Data Centre Hub, Attracting Tech Giants
Alberta is emerging as a prime destination for data centre development, attracting tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon. The province's vast resources, supportive legislation, and existing energy infrastructure are driving this growth.
A recent report underscores Alberta's advantages for data centre projects. The province boasts an abundance of land, water, and energy, along with lower outside temperatures that can reduce climate control costs. This, coupled with a supportive legislative framework and a low corporate tax rate, makes Alberta an attractive choice for data centre construction.
Tech companies are taking notice. Woodland Cree First Nation plans to develop a 650MW data centre, while eStruxture is set to operate the province's largest data centre, slated to begin operation in 2025. Alberta's established oil and gas industry provides existing energy infrastructure and provisions for offsetting carbon emissions, further sweetening the deal for data centre operators.
With the global data centres market predicted to grow robustly, Alberta's advantages are poised to drive further expansion. Cities like Calgary and Edmonton, with their strategic locations and urban advantages, are expected to see increased data centre facilities. As data centres, particularly those supporting AI technologies, have high energy demands, Alberta's resources and supportive environment make it a strong contender in this growing market.
