Alaska Airlines Hit by Second Major IT Outage in a Year
Alaska Airlines has once again been hit by an IT issue, leading to a ground stop that lasted for several hours. This is the second such incident in just over a year. Although the issue was resolved by 11 p.m. Pacific, residual impacts were felt on flights.
On Sunday evening, Alaska Airlines was forced to ground its entire fleet due to an IT outage. The disruption lasted for approximately three hours, causing inconvenience for passengers and delays to flights. This is not the first time the airline has faced such an issue. In April 2024, a system problem with plane weight and balance calculations led to a similar fleet-wide grounding. Alaska Air Group operates a fleet of 238 Boeing 737 and 87 Embraer 175 aircraft, all of which were affected by the recent outage. While the cause of the latest IT outage remains unclear, the airline managed to resolve the issue and restore operations by July 2025.
The recent IT outage at Alaska Airlines has highlighted the importance of robust and reliable IT systems for the smooth operation of air travel. With two such incidents in under a year, the airline will need to ensure that it takes all necessary steps to prevent such disruptions in the future.
