Airbus Opens High-Tech, Eco-Friendly Hangar in Augsburg for A321XLR Production
Airbus has inaugurated a new, highly automated hangar in Augsburg, Germany, dedicated to producing the rear centre tank (RCT) for the A321XLR aircraft. The hangar, designed with employee ergonomics and sustainability in mind, spans nearly 12,000 m2 and includes office space and a canteen. It will employ over 250 people and contribute to the production of the A321XLR, which boasts over 500 orders.
The RCT, with a volume of around 13,000 litres, extends the A321XLR's range to up to 8,700 kilometres. The hangar features state-of-the-art technologies and a high degree of digitalisation and automation, reflecting Airbus' modernisation and digitalisation efforts in the aviation industry. It is part of the company's capacity expansion plans to support the A320 Family's ramp-up to 75 aircraft per month by 2027.
The hangar is also eco-friendly. A photovoltaic system generates electricity for around 140 households annually, and the building's insulation, including a grass lawn roof, reduces energy consumption.
The new hangar in Augsburg will significantly boost Airbus' production capacity and sustainability efforts in the aviation sector. It will play a crucial role in meeting the high demand for the A321XLR aircraft, contributing to the company's goal of producing 75 aircraft per month by 2027.
