India Successfully Tests Agni-5 Missile, Demonstrating Strategic Capability
India has successfully tested its Agni-5 missile, marking the 12th test in the last 13 years. The test, conducted at the Chandipur test range in Odisha, saw the missile travel approximately 4,500 kilometers, according to estimates.
The Agni-5 is an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) capable of carrying up to 4,000 kilograms of warhead. This latest test has demonstrated India's capability to deploy a long-range ballistic missile with a range of around 3,000 miles, serving as a credible deterrent and strengthening national security amidst regional tensions.
The Ministry of Defence has stated that the Agni-5 missile has met all prescribed criteria in the test. The missile is equipped with MIRV technology, allowing it to release 8 to 10 warheads upon reaching its target.
This test follows the Indian Army's continuous practice in different areas, and the success of the test is a significant achievement for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army.
The speed of the Agni-5 missile is around 30,000 kilometers per hour, which is around 24 times faster than the speed of sound. This makes the Agni-5 one of India's most advanced missile systems.
The Agni-5 missile is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, and its MIRV technology allows for a high degree of target flexibility. This capability is crucial in deterring potential threats and maintaining India's strategic stability.
The test of the Agni-5 missile system is considered highly important, as it shows that India is constantly increasing its strategic capability. However, the Indian government has not yet confirmed any plans for additional missile tests.
Recent speculation suggests that India may conduct another long-range missile test on August 21 and 22. The Indian Air Force conducted a war exercise last month, and the notice in the Indian Ocean has caused some to believe that another test may be imminent.
The Agni-5 missile was first tested in 2012, and last year, in 2024, it was tested with MIRV capability. This latest test marks the 12th time that the Agni-5 has been successfully tested, demonstrating India's commitment to maintaining its strategic deterrent capabilities.
