BMW has always been a pioneer in crafting motorcycles that deliver a refined travel experience, and the new R 1300 RT follows suit, aiming to offer more dynamism compared to its predecessor. This touring bike, stars of the show at BMW's Berlin production plant, ups the ante in the realm of sporty touring.
Since the birth of the RT model designation in 1979, it's been known for luxury touring on two wheels. The R 100 RT first set the stage for a grown-up, compact tourer, developed from the sportier R 100 RS. The boxer RT has since become synonymous with superior touring characteristics such as riding and seating comfort, safety, ample room for rider and passenger, and luggage, dynamism, range, payload, ease of use, wind and weather protection, and dependability. Previously, the R 1250 RT reigned supreme.
Witness the evolution of power with the R 1300 RT's 1,300 cc boxer motor (107 kW/145 PS, 149 Nm of torque). This powerhouse has been powering the GS for two years and will soon be powering the unfaired, dynamic R 1300 R and the equally agile sport tourer R 1300 RS.
The declining focus on the RT version by BMW,due to an increased variety in its motorcycle lineup, doesn't mean it's lost its relevance. The new R 1300 RT could inject new energy into this segment with its dynamic ride and high-end features.
Adaptive Lighting System
Leading the technological pack, the R 1300 RT features a new adaptive suspension control system called Dynamic Chassis Adaptation. Offering a variable spring rate adjustment, two independently adjustable damping modes, and two separate riding modes, this system creates a bike that feels like two different motorcycles, both tailored to extreme comfort and dynamic performances. The advanced lighting system is also worth mentioning: LED lights in the front adjust based on your speed, providing optimal illumination in various situations.
The automated shift assist system, previously exclusive to the GS models, now graces the R 1300 RT. This allows for clutchless gear shifting, either using the foot shift lever or a button press. Despite the incorporation of ASA, the bike gains only two kilograms, tipping the scales at 281 kg when fully loaded. Features like heated grips and a built-in phone charging compartment are now standard.
Pack More Features (And a Hefty Price Tag)
The powerful 1.3-liter Boxer engine offers robust energy in all conditions, smooth revving fun, impressive fuel efficiency, and excellent range. The new DCA chassis, tested during the first ride, offers a wider range between comfort and extreme dynamics than ever before. The radar-based assistance and warning systems are also top-notch.
The R 1250 RT has always outperformed its dynamically oriented, engine-superior K 1600 GT counterpart in terms of ride comfort and wind and weather protection. This gap has only grown wider. The wind deflectors on the sides, part of the "Impulse" equipment, work marvels. A new level of smoothness is achieved in how all systems interact on this bike. The seating position is excellent, but BMW has once again improved upon it (compared to the 1250 RT). However, the new, now volume-variable side cases are less practical than the bulkier predecessor cases.
The BMW R 1300 RT is available in the packages of Basis, Triple Black, Impulse, and Option 719 "Camargue." Each differs not just in their look but also in their equipment. The options are virtually limitless. If you really push the configurator, you can easily add another 10,000 euros to the base price of around 23,000 euros. For that, you get extras like a heated backrest on the top case and two-stage heated handlebars. An audio system that adjusts frequency control based on speed could also be yours, and so much more.
