Africa's Gaming Market Booms, Set to Surpass $1B in 2024
Africa, home to the world's largest population of digital-native youth, is set to become a major player in the global games industry. The continent's games market is projected to surpass $1 billion in 2024, according to recent reports. This growth is fuelled by a surge in internet-connected smartphones, with Africa boasting more than the combined total of the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
A joint report by Geopoll and the Pan-Africa Gaming Group (PAGG) is guiding strategic investments and content creation in the African games industry. The research, involving several game developer studios, reveals that 62% of surveyed gamers have made purchases, either for games or in-game items. Moreover, 32% engage in games for three or more hours daily, indicating a high level of commitment and enthusiasm.
Mobile games are particularly popular, with 92% of gamers in key markets like Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa playing on their smartphones. This preference is driving the industry's growth, as mobile devices are more accessible and affordable than other games platforms.
The future of games in Africa looks promising, with the continent's immense potential highlighted by this research. As the digital-native youth population continues to grow and engage with games, the African market is expected to flourish. Strategic investments and tailored content, guided by reports like the Geopoll and PAGG study, will be crucial in harnessing this potential and shaping the continent's role in the global games landscape.
