Aeon Aims to Triple Vietnam Retail Presence by 2030

Japanese retail giant Aeon has announced ambitious expansion plans in Vietnam, aiming to triple its shopping centers and stores by 2030. The company, which already operates 316 retail outlets in the country, sees significant growth potential in Vietnam's retail market.

Aeon's expansion strategy includes targeting major cities, surrounding areas, and less-developed regions. The Red River Delta, Mekong Delta, and central Vietnam, including Hue and Danang, are among the areas earmarked for growth. In addition to its existing malls, Aeon plans to open a mid-sized supermarket in Hai Phong in 2026.

Aeon has already invested about $1.5 billion in Vietnam since 2014, making it the company's second most important market for investment after Japan. The company's expansion is supported by Vietnam's growing retail market, which is currently growing at about 7% and could reach 12% in the near future. Modern retail penetration in Vietnam is around 13% to 15%, leaving ample room for expansion.

Aeon's latest expansion, the Tan An General Merchandise Store and Supermarket in Tay Ninh province, opened on September 23, 2025, is a testament to the company's commitment to Vietnam. With a planned tripling of its retail presence by 2030, Aeon is set to significantly impact Vietnam's retail landscape, driving growth and competition in the market.
