Scotland's Oldest Distillery Sets Auction Record with Artistic Whisky Decanter

In a remarkable auction on December 9, 2023, The Glenturret—Scotland's oldest working distillery—broke a record with a $200,000 bid for the artist's proof decanter of "Eight Decades." This exceptional creation, a collaboration between renowned artist James Turrell, Lalique, and The Glenturret, will see its entire proceeds contributed to the Roden Crater Foundation.

James Turrell, an esteemed American artist noted for his work with light and space, celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year. To commemorate this milestone, he partnered with The Glenturret and Lalique to design his inaugural whisky decanter. The 'Eight Decades' decanter was limited to 80 pieces worldwide, each featuring a sleek silhouette topped with a deep-blue pyramidal crystal stopper reminiscent of Ancient Egyptian artistry.

Offered at Sotheby's Whisky & Whiskey Auction in New York, the lot included proof decanter #008, which contained a specially crafted whisky by The Glenturret's Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno, along with three hand-signed sketches by James Turrell from the decanter's design phase. The lucky bidder will also receive an exclusive visit to Lalique's factory in Alsace and The Glenturret's distillery in Crieff, culminating in a dining experience at the Michelin-starred The Glenturret Lalique restaurant.

John Laurie, Managing Director at The Glenturret, was deeply enthused about the bid, commenting, "What a culmination to the year! Collaborating with James Turrell was an honor, and the auction result stand as a testament to that. We are especially delighted as all proceeds are earmarked for charity."

Following the auction, a limited number of the original 'Eight Decades' Decanter remains available through The Glenturrett's website. This collaboration between art, luxury, and fine spirits has proven to be a highly sought-after item among collectors and connoisseurs.

In this year's Sotheby's Whisky & Whiskey Auction, the collaboration between James Turrell, The Glenturret, and Lalique, named 'Eight Decades,' showcased a blend of lifestyle, fashion-and-beauty, and technology, as it combined artistry with whiskey production. The record-breaking auction proceeds will support the entertainment sector, specifically the Roden Crater Foundation, and the successful bidder will gain exclusive access to various celebrity-worthy experiences.
