ABO Wind Wins Bid for 5GW 'Toqlukuti'k Wind & Hydrogen' Project in Newfoundland
ABO Wind has secured a bid for wind energy projects on state-owned 'Crown Land' in Newfoundland and Labrador, alongside three other companies. The German-based firm plans to develop the 'Toqlukuti'k Wind and Hydrogen' project in the awarded areas.
The Toqlukuti'k Wind and Hydrogen' project, with a planned capacity of up to 5 GW, is part of the German-Canadian hydrogen partnership signed in Stephenville, Newfoundland, last August. ABO Wind Canada has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Miawpukek First Nation, demonstrating a commitment to local collaboration.
The project team is in regular contact with local interest groups in the planning area. The bid areas are located near a biofuel refinery of Braya Renewable Fuels in the community of Come by Chance, indicating potential synergies. ABO Wind plans to successively add more wind turbines to increase the capacity of the electrolysis facilities, with the project name, Toqlukuti'k, meaning 'to work together' in the traditional Mi'kmaq language.
Initially, the green hydrogen produced will be used at the nearby refinery, with long-term plans for export to Europe. The company involved in the collaboration for the hydrogen and wind energy project is Toqlukuti’k Wind and Hydrogen Ltd.
ABO Wind's successful bid for wind energy projects on 'Crown Land' in Newfoundland and Labrador opens the door for the development of the Toqlukuti'k Wind and Hydrogen' project. This project, with its planned capacity of up to 5 GW, is set to contribute significantly to the region's green energy transition and hydrogen production, with potential export opportunities to Europe.
