A27 Closure Disrupts Logistics: BLG Logistics CEO Calls for Infrastructure Investment

The closure of the A27 and the suspension of the railway bridge over the Hunte in Elsfleth have caused significant disruptions to transport and logistics in the region. BLG Logistics, a major employer in the area, has expressed concern about the impact on its operations and the wider economy.

Frank Dreeke, CEO of BLG Logistics, has stressed the importance of investing in infrastructure to ensure the future prosperity of the country. This comes as the A27, a crucial transport artery, remains closed due to a dilapidated culvert, causing heavy vehicles to seek alternative routes and new permits.

The closure has led to a backlog in authorities, with the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport currently working to clarify the situation. Meanwhile, the Hunte is closed to shipping for several weeks, at least, following a ship accident that damaged the railway bridge, suspending rail traffic and affecting ports in Elsfleth, Nordenham, and Brake.

The A27 closure has cut off major ports Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven from the hinterland, disadvantageing customers in the high- & heavy sector. Employees of BLG Logistics are facing longer routes and delays due to these closures. However, the Neustädter Hafen in Bremen has offered available capacities to affected ports.

The closures and disruptions highlight the critical role of infrastructure in maintaining economic activity. With 8,130 BLG Logistics employees in the Bremen and Bremerhaven region affected, the situation underscores the need for swift resolution and investment in infrastructure to prevent such disruptions in the future.
